The best sports handicappers preview National League match-up in the city of brotherly love, as the Braves travel into Philly in hopes of solidifying their stranglehold on the National League’s top Wild Card spot. With the Nats winning yesterday, they have secured themselves a playoff spot, and their magic number to clinch the NL East is 8. The Braves will do everything in their power to make sure that number does not decrease.

The Braves currently have a 6 game lead over St. Louis atop the NL Wild Card standings, keep an eye out for a surging Milwaukee team, and a Philadelphia team who is only 4 games out of the second Wild Card position, play what some might call their best baseball of the 2012 season.

Although Atlanta has won 7 of their last 10 meetings, the Phillies rotation is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Later in the series the Braves will have to face off against Doc Halladay, and Cliff Lee. For tonight’s game they will get their chancec at Philly right hander Kyle Kendrick,  as he takes the mound opposite Braves right hander Tommy Hanson.

For the Braves, Hanson is 12-8 overall, and the team has won 19 of his 28 starts, pitching to a less than stellar ERA of 4.33 in 158 innings. However over his last 3 starts, the ERA has been better for Hanson at 3.31 in 16.2 innings pitched and recording a WHIP of 1.10. The Braves have won 2 of Hanson’s last 3 starts, averaging only 2.67 runs of support and allowing 4.

For the Phillies, Kendrick is 9-11 overall with an ERA a shade under 4 in 143.2 innings pitched. The Phillies are 9-13 when Kendrick has started thus far in 2012. During his last 3 games, Kendrick is 1-2 with an ERA of 3.50 in 18 innings pitched, allowing 15 hits and walking 4 for a WHIP of just 1.06. Although the Phils are allowing only 2.67 runs per game when Kendrick is on the mound, the more alarming fact is that he is only getting an average of 1.33 runs of support in his last 3 outings.

It’s safe to say that neither of these pitchers are receiving much support from their offenses. In fact, the under is 1-5 in their last 3 starts (combined).
