Shark Handicapping NFC North Preview

The best sports handicappers offer insight to the NFC North. It’s no secret that the NFC North is a competitive division year in and year out (well at least 3 out of 4), and this year looks to be more of the same. In fact, it is entirely possible to see (maybe even expect) three of these teams make the playoffs. Read on to see a more detailed preview for all NFC North teams.

Chicago Bears - Projected record 10-6

Without question, the Bears will welcome back Matt Forte, after missing the end of the 2011 season due to injury. Forte is a workhorse for the Bears, and a nearly irreplaceable presence in the backfield.  The bigger question is which Jay Cutler we will see in 2012. It’s true, that the Bears have some major pieces in place; Cutler’s targets certainly look promising with Hester, Knox, Jeffery, and Marshall lining up with him. Defense never seems to be a question in Chicago. Keep a keen eye on Cutler; he will ultimately determine the success of the Bears

Detroit Lions – Projected Record 9-7

The key for the 2012 Lions? Stay healthy! After putting together a very impressive 2011 season (while plagued by injury), it seems that Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are prepared for another year of battle, expect Johnson to be targeted, many, many times by Stafford. Keep in mind that Johnson will be on the cover of “Madden” take that for what it’s worth. The lions also return 5/5 starters from their O-line, which should provide a good deal of protection for Stafford. Expect to see the Lions in the playoff chase down the stretch.

Green Bay Packers - Projected Record 14-2

Coming off a 13-3 season, losing only to the Giant’s in the playoffs in 2011, look for the Packers to be a major force in the division again. We all know the story behind Aaron Rodgers, he’s an absolute gift at the QB position for the Pack. There is one frightening flaw for the Pack, he no longer has Matt Flynn to back him up (just in case). One thing is certain, Green Bay must be better with regard to passing defense, many teams in their division have put together improved rosters. James Starks will need to remain healthy and active in order to execute an effective ground game.

Minnesota Vikings - Projected Record 3-13

The Vikings return only 14 starters in 2012, one of them being a star running back, some feel has “Rushed” back to the football field. The Vikings will send Christian Ponder back to the field this year, with hopes of improving some issues with accuracy, consistency, and pocket awareness. If Ponder fails, expect to see Webb or Rosenfels take over the reigns. Minnesota made a move to acquire Jerome Simpson during the offseason, he figures to be Ponder’s main target. This would slide Harvin down to the #2 receiver position. It could still be fun to watch Jared Allen hit a quarterback every once in a while, but unfortunately for Vikings fans, don’t expect them to compete in this division this year.
